The Kowa Party Presidential candidate, Dr Sina Fagbenro Byron in responding to the controversy and news about NNPC and the reported announcement by exVP Atiku, the Presidential candidate for PDP of his intention to sell NNPC if he wins the elections and becomes the president.
Reacting to Atiku’s pronouncement, SFB said he understands that the NNPC definitely has challenges in terms of accountability, control and efficiency and a reform of Oil sector interest management is overdue , however, he believes that the ex VP is wrong to have concluded on his own about selling the NNPC without subjecting that decision to wider consultation , both formal and informal.
While speaking to reporters on various national issues, Byron went further to say that views from the legislative arm of government is pertinent to the sale of such crucial institution remembering that the NNPC belongs to the commonwealth of Nigeria so the people through their representatives must have a say and a public hearing organized by the national assembly would probably help ensure inclusive decision making and this is the beginning of transparency. He said that Atiku is well aware that privatization programs are also a conduit for grand corruption and the further impoverishment of Nigerians if carried out at a whim and without sufficient thinking through.
He said he appreciates and shares the exVPs concern but Byron would like to see the PIB bill passed as soon as possible to improve transparency in the sector generally.
