Broadcasters set for major honours as RTPWN births Radio/Television Prestigious Awards

Nigerian broadcasters are set to begin to reap from their years of practice as RTPWN prepares for the maiden edition of Radio and Television Prestigious Awards in Nigeria.

The RTPWN Awards first took place in Nairob, in Kenya in 2018 before an audience of over 3000 people who witnessed the honour done to Kenyan broadcasters drawn from radio and television, the first of it’s kind in the East African country.

The awards, according to the organisers is holding in Nigeria at the Transcorp Hotel, Abuja in November, 2019 because of the need to adequately appreciate Nigerian broadcasters, create a unique reward system that will not just impact on the lives and practice of the individual winning broadcasters but also serve as an encouragement to Nigerian youths who may want to take up careers in broadcasting.

Speaking at a press conference during the week in Abuja, the Chairman of RTPWN Limited, Dr. Samuel Wilcox said he was encouraged to bring the awards home after the huge success it recorded in Kenya, and most importantly for the fact that Nigeria is the hub of broadcasting in Africa.

Speaking on the need for the awards, Dr Wilcox said: “It is undeniable fact that Radio and Television play vital roles in national development. Through Radio and Television, information is disseminated, entertainment provided, inspiration is sourced, education is imparted and energy created. With these in mind, the roles these faces and voices behind the operational functionality of Radio and Television cannot be ignored.
“The Nigeria Radio and Television sector is identified as one of the most progressive and aggressively growing sectors on the African continent, making it imperative to acknowledge the service input by individuals from accross the sector; this is the heart and essence of RTPWN Awards Nigeria.”

Breaking down the mission of the RTPWN Awards, Wilcox said the awards is set to recognize and appreciate the resources and contributions invested in the industry by stakeholders, practitioners and individuals; give deserving personalities the spotlight and adulation they deserve; motivate others in the industry to elevate their standards to ensure focus is placed on providing relevant mad quality content to the public and also bring together personalities and practitioners from accross the country, on a night glitz and razzmatazz, where broadcasters, who have distinguished and excelled and who have been chosen for honour, will have their day under the spotlight.

Throwing more light on the modus of the project, Wilcox noted that the awards is not just for individual broadcasters alone but also an opportunity to pay homage and appreciate institutions, practitioners and personalities, who through hardwork, service and dedication, have played vital roles in placing the sector on a platform of international acclaim.

To ensure inclusivity, the organisers have concluded that broadcasters in both English and Pidgin English news based, entertainment and lifestyle programming and personalities will be entitled for nomination.

On the process leading to the conferment of the awards, the RTPWN boss said the entire selection process starts with the work of the regional nomination committees that have been put in place to ensure even national spread, leading to the prunning of the nominees to a manageable number and unveiling by the awards Board of Trustees and final judges in Lagos.

To ensure that the awards is not just credible but seen to be credible, Nigerians will be given the opportunity to vote and determine who gets what at the awards.

“This is an award with a difference; nobody or group of people will just sit somewhere and hand pick a winner. Nigerians will vote for broadcasters of their choice through a short code that we will assign to every nominee. We want Nigerians to be able to accept whoever emerges winner at the awards; we don’t just want a credible awards, the process must be seen to be equally credible”, he said.
