Abuja, October 20, 2024–
The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has strongly denied rumors of an impeachment, dismissing them as unfounded.
In a press release issued on today, the council stressed that no valid steps have been taken to remove its leadership, despite inaccurate reports circulating, even in reputable media outlets.
The embattled Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Osaretin Osadebamwen, compared the false impeachment claims to the failed January 6, 2021, insurrection in the United States. “Just as the attempt to overturn democracy in the U.S. collapsed, so too will any unlawful effort to remove the SWC,” Osadebamwen said.
The union pointed to Article 5 of its constitution, which clearly outlines the procedures for impeaching the SWC. These steps require a two-thirds vote of no confidence from the National Executive Council (NEC), following a formal investigation into allegations such as misconduct or financial mismanagement.
“The SWC is aware of certain individuals who, driven by personal ambitions, are trying to bypass due process,” the statement read, accusing these individuals of undermining the union’s integrity.
Despite the ongoing challenges, the SWC affirmed its commitment to stability. “For six years, we have safeguarded the council’s peace and integrity, and we will not allow anyone to tarnish the union’s reputation,” the committee declared.
The SWC also appealed to media outlets, including ARISE TV, to ensure their reporting is accurate and not fueled by misinformation.
In closing, the statement reiterated that any attempt to unseat the leadership must be done constitutionally, adding that the current SWC remains in office.
