Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of General Godwin Osagie Abbe, a distinguished son of the state, who died on Saturday night in Abuja after a prolonged illness.
In a heartfelt statement, Governor Okpebholo described General Abbe as “a shining star whose light has been extinguished, but whose legacy will continue to inspire and guide us.”
Reflecting on General Abbe’s illustrious life, the Governor noted his exceptional contributions to the military, public service, and nation-building.
Born on January 10, 1949, General Abbe was on the brink of celebrating his 75th birthday. “His life was a testament to discipline, dedication, and selfless service,” the Governor remarked, highlighting the late General’s storied career, which began with his promotion to Second Lieutenant in 1967.
General Abbe held key positions, including Battalion Commander, Instructor at the Nigerian Defence Academy, and Staff Officer Grade I, cementing his legacy as a revered military leader. General Abbe also served as Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State (1988-1990) and later as Minister of Defence and Internal Affairs. His commitment to national service left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history.
Governor Okpebholo extended his condolences to the Abbe family, the people of Edo State, and the entire nation. “We celebrate his life, his service, and his contributions to our great nation,” he said.
“As we bid farewell to this remarkable individual, we reflect on the traditional and philosophical principles that guided his life and career. May his soul rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to illuminate the path to greatness for Edo State and Nigeria.”
