In a startling development, Zambian authorities have arrested two men accused of attempting to use witchcraft to harm President Hakainde Hichilema.
The suspects, Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri, were detained in Lusaka after allegedly being hired to carry out the act. According to police, the men, described as “witchdoctors,” were found in possession of a live chameleon and various charms.
They have been charged under Zambia’s Witchcraft Act for offenses including “possession of charms,” “professing knowledge of witchcraft,” and “cruelty to wild animals.”
“These arrests reflect the seriousness with which we treat such allegations. Superstitions or not, we cannot allow anyone to threaten national security or the President’s well-being,” a police spokesperson stated.
The suspects reportedly claimed they were promised a reward of over ZK2 million (approximately $73,000) by Nelson Banda, the alleged mastermind of the plot and the younger brother of Independent MP Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda. Nelson Banda is said to be on the run. Emmanuel Banda, who is facing robbery charges in Zimbabwe, has ties to the Patriotic Front (PF), the opposition party led by former President Edgar Lungu.
The PF has dismissed allegations against the Bandas as politically motivated.
“This is yet another attempt to tarnish the image of our party and our members. We believe in democracy, not witchcraft,” a PF spokesperson remarked.
The bizarre case has brought global attention to the lingering belief in witchcraft in parts of Zambia and its role in political and social conflicts.
“This incident highlights the extremes to which some individuals will go in pursuit of power. It’s shocking and unacceptable,” said a senior government official.
Authorities have yet to set a court date for the accused, while the hunt for Nelson Banda continues. Meanwhile, Zambians remain gripped by the sensational story, which has cast a spotlight on the intersection of tradition, politics, and superstition in the country.
