Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has emphasized that the spirit of Christmas embodies the values of love, hope, and unity, transcending differences in tribe, religion, and politics.

The Governor delivered this heartfelt message at the 2024 Edo Christmas Carol held at the Lawn Tennis Court of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

The event attracted a host of dignitaries, including Deputy Governor Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Musa Ikhilor; former Edo Assembly Speakers Rt. Hon. Justin Okonoboh and Francis Okiye; Head of Service Anthony Okungbowa; traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil servants, and other notable personalities.

Governor Okpebholo highlighted the deeper significance of the event, noting that it is more than just a night of singing and celebration.

“It is with great joy that I welcome all of you to this beautiful Christmas Carol as we gather to celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ. This is particularly memorable for me as it marks my first Christmas Carol as Governor,” Okpebholo said.

He continued, “Christmas is a time of love, hope, and unity. It reminds us of the importance of compassion, generosity, and peace. Tonight’s celebration goes beyond entertainment—it is a testament to the values that unite us as one people, irrespective of our differences.”

The Governor called on citizens to embrace these values, saying, “As we listen to the wonderful voices tonight, let us remember that our strength as a people lies in our diversity. Together, we can build a brighter and more inclusive tomorrow.”

Okpebholo also made a special appeal to children, encouraging them to let the joy of Christmas inspire them to dream big and grow with love and kindness.

In a bid to make the celebration memorable, the Governor instituted a raffle draw, with prizes including a mini-bus, tricycle, generators, sewing machines, grinding machines, and other items.

The night featured melodious performances by choirs from various denominations, including Living Faith Church, Miracle Assembly, Blessed Virgin Mary, Church of God Mission, and EL Excess Band. Special performances by the Theatre Arts Department of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and Leetu Man added a touch of artistic flair to the event.

Bible lessons were read in English and pidgin by diverse personalities, including Edesili Anani-Okpebholo, administrator of the Office of the First Lady; a representative of vegetable sellers; a returnee; and a bus driver, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the evening.

The highpoint of the celebration was the presentation of raffle draw prizes to lucky winners.

Governor Okpebholo concluded by wishing all Edo people a joyous Christmas and a prosperous New Year, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fostering unity and progress in the state.
