Tributes Pour in for Former FCT Minister

Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and seasoned military officer, Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has passed away at the age of 81.

According to family sources, he died on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a protracted illness.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State confirmed the news in a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere. The governor described General Useni’s death as a “tremendous loss” to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation at large.

“General Useni was a man of exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to service, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security and political landscape,” Governor Mutfwang stated.

Reflecting on the late General’s career, Mutfwang highlighted his remarkable service in various capacities, including Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. He also noted Useni’s significant contributions to peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.

“After his illustrious military career, General Useni transitioned into politics, continuing his service to the nation,” the governor remarked. “He served as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and was later elected Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).”

Governor Mutfwang praised General Useni’s life of selfless service, emphasizing his legacy of compassion, kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of others.

“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” the statement concluded.

Lt. General Useni’s passing marks the end of a significant chapter in Nigeria’s history, with many hailing him as a pillar of service and leadership.
