Security operatives at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Plateau State, have foiled another midnight attack by unidentified gunmen, killing one of the assailants during a fierce gun battle.

The institute’s management confirmed the incident in an official statement issued Thursday by the Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, disclosing that the attack occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, when the armed men attempted to breach the institute’s security perimeter.

According to the statement, security personnel immediately engaged the attackers as they tried to force their way through the outer perimeter. Overwhelmed by the swift, coordinated response, the gunmen fled, leaving behind one of their members, who was fatally shot in the exchange.

“The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute’s security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late on Wednesday night, 1 July 2026,” the statement read. “One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries.”

Dr. Samuel assured the public that the institute remained calm and secure, noting that all course participants, staff, residents, and facilities were safe and accounted for.

The latest attack comes barely two weeks after a similar assault on the institute and its host community left three people, including security personnel, dead — an incident that had prompted authorities to beef up security around the strategic institution.

Following Wednesday night’s attack, joint security agencies have intensified intelligence-gathering and tracking operations across surrounding areas to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

NIPSS management urged staff, residents, and the general public to remain calm and disregard unverified social media reports or misinformation intended to cause panic, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains its top priority.
