ABUJA, NIGERIA — In a refreshed push to bridge the long-standing trust deficit between law enforcement and the public, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced major upgrades to its Complaint Response Unit (CRU), its central digital hub for receiving, tracking, and resolving citizen grievances.
The announcement was made by the newly appointed Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), CSP Anietie Okokon Edem, during a familiarization visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council headquarters in Abuja.

Addressing journalists present, CSP Edem highlighted that the CRU remains the Force’s primary internal mechanism operating 24/7 to confront allegations of extortion, harassment, illegal detention, and human rights violations by officers across all state commands.
Driven by the Inspector-General of Police’s reform agenda, the ongoing upgrades aim to streamline how citizen petitions are processed.

Key Enhancements to the CRU Platform:

  • Faster Response Times: Cutting down bureaucratic delays to address distress calls and petitions swiftly.
  • Digital Case Tracking: Allowing complainants to monitor the status of their reported cases in real time.
  • Transparent Outcomes: Ensuring disciplinary measures taken against erring officers are made clear to the public.

Emphasizing that policing in a democracy requires active public scrutiny, CSP Edem urged media houses to help amplify the CRU’s reach, ensuring everyday Nigerians know how and where to report police high-handedness.

“Journalists are part of the police family,” CSP Edem stated, noting that constructive, informed reporting remains vital for holding institutions accountable while sustaining meaningful police reforms.

To deepen this synergy beyond the national headquarters, the FPRO revealed upcoming plans for a dedicated zonal media parley with Zone 7 Command, providing journalists closer access to operational updates and accountability metrics.

Welcoming the police delegation, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, commended CSP Edem’s proactive approach and expressed the council’s readiness to collaborate.
Ike assured that journalists in the FCT would actively report citizens’ complaints and monitor the CRU’s resolution rates, serving as a watchdog to ensure reported abuses receive concrete follow-up rather than being swept under the rug.
