The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall nationwide from Monday to Wednesday, September 23, 2026, warning that strong winds may precede storms in affected areas.
NiMet disclosed this in a weather outlook released on Sunday, September 20, detailing region-by-region conditions expected to unfold over the three-day period.
For Monday, the agency forecast thunderstorms with light rain over parts of Taraba and Kebbi states in the morning, expanding to scattered thunderstorms with moderate rain across the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi later in the day.
“For the North-Central region, thunderstorms accompanied by light rain are expected over parts of Niger State during the morning hours. Later during the afternoon or evening hours, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rain are expected over most parts of the region,” NiMet said.
Cloudy skies were forecast across the southern region on Monday morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, intensifying to thunderstorms with light rain region-wide by afternoon or evening.
On Tuesday, patches of cloud are expected over the northern region in the morning, with thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Taraba, giving way to thunderstorms with moderate rain across most of the north later in the day.
“For the North-Central region, partly cloudy skies are expected during the morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau States,” the agency said.
The southern region should expect mostly cloudy skies on Tuesday morning, followed by thunderstorms and light rain over parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and the South-South.
By Wednesday, partly cloudy skies are forecast across the north in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rain hitting Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states, spreading to most of the northern region later in the day.
The North-Central region will see partly cloudy skies in the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rain over parts of the FCT, Plateau, Niger and Nasarawa, before thunderstorms with moderate rain cover most of the region later.
Cloudy skies are expected across the southern region on Wednesday morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rain across most parts later in the day.
NiMet urged residents to take precautions as strong winds may precede thunderstorms in areas expecting rainfall. “The public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision,” the agency said.
Motorists were advised to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, while residents were urged to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms. “Stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees,” NiMet stated.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation for effective operational planning.
