Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the prominent Afenifere leader, has passed away at the age of 96. He died peacefully on Friday morning at his residence in Lekki, Lagos.

In a statement released by the family, they announced his death with a message of gratitude for his selfless service to God, the nation, and humanity. The statement reads: “With a heart full of gratitude for a selfless life spent in the service of God, the nation, and humanity, we announce the passing on of our beloved patriarch, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo. He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos home at the age of 96.”

Adebanjo, a distinguished lawyer and politician, was a fervent advocate for true federalism and played an instrumental role in the political landscape of Nigeria. He was a former organizing secretary of the Action Group and the national leader of Afenifere. He is survived by his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, aged 94, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

The family also expressed their deep appreciation for his lifelong fight for truth, equity, and justice, adding, “His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and he fought for this until his last breath.”

In honoring his legacy, the family is consulting with his friends, associates, and various groups across Nigeria and beyond to finalize funeral arrangements. Further details on the plans will be shared soon.

A condolence register has been opened at his Lekki residence (8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos) and at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
