Alabukun Heir Marks Birthday with Groundnuts, Water, Says “It’s the Thought That Counts”

In a surprising but symbolic gesture, a prominent member of the renowned Odulate family, owners of the legendary Nigerian analgesic brand Alabukun Powder, marked his birthday on Monday, May 26, by sharing three retail bags of groundnuts with friends and acquaintances.

The low-key celebration took place within the premises of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council in Abuja and stood out for its striking simplicity. The entire cost of the birthday refreshment was estimated at just five hundred naira.

Guests were treated to handfuls of groundnuts while the celebrant, in a show of personal restraint, sipped from a quarter-filled glass of water throughout the event.

Explaining the choice, the celebrant said it was a reflection of Nigeria’s current economic challenges and a deliberate effort to send a message.

“In these times, we must learn to live within our means,” he said. “It’s not until I kill a cow or serve expensive drinks before people can celebrate with me. What matters most is the intention, the spirit of the occasion.”

The celebrant’s unusual birthday sparked both amusement and admiration among attendees, who praised his humility and realism.

“He reminded us that celebration is not about extravagance but sincerity,” said one guest. “In fact, this might be one of the most honest birthdays I’ve attended.”

The Odulate family legacy, through Alabukun Powder, has long been associated with resilience and simplicity, values that were clearly on display at this symbolic celebration.
