In a bold move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s constitutional democracy, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has put forward a series of recommendations for constitutional amendments.

His proposals, submitted to the National Assembly, focus on improving electoral laws and ensuring the rotation of the presidency across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

In a letter dated August 30, 2024, addressed to the Deputy Senate President and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, Senator Barau Jibrin, Atiku called for significant reforms. “Our democracy can only thrive if we ensure that every region feels represented. A rotational presidency is not just a political move but a means to foster national unity and equity,” Atiku stated in his proposal.

One of the key components of Atiku’s recommendations includes a revision of the educational qualifications required for candidates running for office, as well as measures to ensure greater internal democracy within political parties.

He emphasized the importance of these reforms, saying, “Nigeria’s electoral process must be a reflection of our democratic values. We need laws that are clear, transparent, and allow for the emergence of true leadership.”

The proposals are part of ongoing efforts to review Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, with the aim of addressing long-standing concerns over political inclusivity and the integrity of elections in the country.
