HBO have announced via social media that Half Man, Richard Gadd’s follow-up to Baby Reindeer, has begun filming. The show stars Gadd and Jamie Bell as two men who reunite at a wedding, bringing old wounds to the surface.
The Instagram post reads: “From the Emmy Award-winning creator and star of Baby Reindeer Richard Gadd, the HBO Original series #HalfMan is now in production”. It was accompanied by an image of Gadd holding a production slate for the show.
A press release for co-producers BBC described the plot of the show: “Half Man follows estranged ‘brothers’ Niall (Jamie Bell) and Ruben (Richard Gadd). When Ruben shows up unexpectedly at Niall’s wedding, it leads to an explosion of violence that catapults us back through their lives”.
It continued: “Spanning almost 40 years from the 1980s to the present day, this ambitious series will cover the highs and lows of the brothers’ relationship, from them meeting as teenagers to their falling out as adults – with all the good, bad, terrible, funny, angry, and challenging moments along the way. Half Man will capture the wild energy of a changing city – a changing world, even – and try to get to the bottom of the difficult question… What does it mean to be a man?”
In the release, Gadd enthused about co-star Bell, saying: “When I wrote the show, I did it with him in mind, never thinking for a second we would manage to land him. So, I could not be happier for everything that has come to pass in getting him on board. He is one of the greatest actors of his generation and I am so looking forward to seeing what he does with the role”.
Based on Gadd’s stage show, Baby Reindeer became a huge hit for Netflix upon its release in 2024. It also scored two awards at last month’s Golden Globes – Best Limited or Anthology Series or Television Film and Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film for co-star Jessica Gunning.
Recently, Gadd opened up about being bullied at school, talking about the point when he realised “things had actually got quite bad”.
