A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has strongly criticized the Federal Government after security operatives barricaded the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, halting planned high-level meetings of the National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) scheduled for Monday.
Addressing journalists after being denied access alongside other members of the PDP National Working Committee, George described the police action as an alarming threat to democracy.
“This is our property,” he said. “Was there any court order preventing us from holding a meeting in our own office? What exactly is going on here? I was a young man in 1962 when the crisis in the South West began, we must not repeat that madness.”
Expressing concern over the implications of such state actions, George warned, “You come to our office, surround it with police just because we want to meet? Do you want to turn Nigeria into North Korea or Russia? We won’t allow it, and Nigerians won’t stand for it.”
While affirming that the meeting would still hold, George declined to reveal the alternative venue.
