…President Tinubu Extends Heartfelt Condolences
In a solemn announcement from the State House, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, confirmed the passing of Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, at the age of 56.
Lt. General Lagbaja, who was appointed to his position in June 2023, passed away on Tuesday night in Lagos after a period of illness.
“Lt. General Lagbaja was a leader of immense dedication and integrity,” President Tinubu stated, offering his “heartfelt condolences to the family and the entire Nigerian Armed Forces.” He added, “His contributions to Nigeria’s peace and security will be long remembered, and his legacy of service will continue to inspire.”
Lt. General Lagbaja, born on February 28, 1968, began his distinguished military journey in 1987 when he joined the Nigerian Defence Academy, and he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Infantry Corps in 1992. Over his career, he held several pivotal roles, including platoon commander in the 93 Battalion and later the 72 Special Forces Battalion.
His service in critical internal security operations across Nigeria was particularly notable. He played an instrumental role in operations such as *Operation ZAKI* in Benue State, *Lafiya Dole* in Borno, *Udoka* in Southeast Nigeria, and *Operation Forest Sanity* across Kaduna and Niger States, showcasing his leadership and tactical expertise.
An alumnus of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, Lt. General Lagbaja earned a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies, underscoring his commitment to professional growth and excellence in military leadership.
Lt. General Lagbaja leaves behind his beloved wife, Mariya, and their two children. “He was not only a patriot but a devoted family man whose memory will be cherished,” President Tinubu expressed in his statement, honoring Lt. General Lagbaja’s contributions to the nation and extending his best wishes for “eternal peace.”
The nation mourns the loss of a dedicated leader and true patriot who served Nigeria with unwavering loyalty.
