A Chinese court has sentenced former agriculture and rural affairs minister Tang Renjian to death with a two-year reprieve after finding him guilty of taking massive bribes.
According to state-run Xinhua News Agency, the court in Jilin Province ruled on Sunday that Tang exploited his positions between 2007 and 2024 to secure business deals, project contracts, and job placements in exchange for favors.
Investigators found that Tang received illicit payments and valuables worth more than 268 million yuan—about 37.5 million U.S. dollars.
China’s anti-corruption watchdog first announced in May last year that Tang was under investigation while still serving as minister. He was dismissed from the role four months later.
The ruling comes amid President Xi Jinping’s sweeping anti-graft campaign, which has targeted senior officials in government and the military as Beijing seeks to reinforce party discipline and demonstrate its crackdown on corruption.
