Fans of Dune: Part Two have been celebrating after it won the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media last night (February 2).
The victory for the space epic’s soundtrack, composed by Hans Zimmer, came its disqualification from the Oscars after it was ruled ineligible due to the amount of music it carried over from the first Dune movie.
The rules from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the Oscars, state: “In cases such as sequels and franchises from any media, the score must not use more than 20% of pre-existing themes and music borrowed from previous scores in the franchise.”
Dune 2 was still eligible for Grammy nominations, however, and it beat out American Fiction, Challengers, The Color Purple and Shōgun for the accolade. Also last night, it won five awards at the 52nd annual Saturn Awards.
Fans of the movie had a lot to say in response, with one on X (Twitter) describing it as having been “robbed” of an Oscar. Another wrote: “And it somehow is ineligible for the Oscars. Well it was the best score of 2024…at least the Grammys recognized that.”
One wrote, “Grammys recognizing dune part 2 more than the Academy,” while another user said, simply: “Tell the Oscars to SUCK IT.”

One fan pointed out that Zimmer is now a five-time Grammy winner, while another said, “Hans Zimmer does it again” and called him “a true maestro of our time.” And another user compared Dune 2 winning a Grammy to Ariana Grande’s Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress – for her role as Glinda in Wicked – writing: “Ariana getting Oscars and Dune part 2 getting Grammys… this timeline is wrong.”
Hans Zimmer is now a 5x GRAMMYs winner with Dune Part 2! His wins include:
• Gladiator (2000)
• The Dark Knight (2008)
• Inception (2010)

Hans Zimmer does it again! Another Grammy for Dune 2, proving once more that no one crafts cinematic soundscapes like he does. The desert has never sounded more epic. A true maestro of our time! #HansZimmer #DunePartTwo #GRAMMYs pic.twitter.com/MERoCI9nBb

Elsewhere at the Grammys, Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter were among the biggest winners, The Weeknd ended his boycott of the ceremony to give a surprise live performance, and Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars performed together.
Meanwhile, Dune 2 director Denis Villeneuve told Variety last year that he was determined to get the score into the Oscars despite it being considered ineligible. He said: “I don’t think this is over yet… I was there when Hans wrote the music and he did a tremendous amount of music. Part Two is a new score. I don’t accept this because it’s one of the most beautiful scores Hans has ever written, and I would love it, at least, to be considered.”
NME gave the movie a four-star review, writing: “If there’s an issue with Dune: Part Two, it’s only that the ending feels a little rushed, considering the near six-hour build-up over the past two movies. At any rate, the door is left wide open for a third instalment, and Villeneuve has already indicated his willingness to continue with an adaptation of Herbert’s sequel: Dune Messiah, should Part Two rake in enough spicy space cash, so there may well be more to come. In the meantime, make sure you see this on the biggest, loudest screen you can find.”
