At the 2025 Easter Cantata Concert organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, key voices from the legislature, security agencies, and media came together with a unified call for national cohesion, responsible journalism, and transformative leadership to drive the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Held under the theme “Renewal and Hope: Harnessing the Transformative Power of Unity and Progress”, the event brought together lawmakers, journalists, security officials, and civil society leaders in a celebration steeped in reflection, music, and messages of encouragement.

“We must be willing to step on toes” — Abejide

Delivering a rousing keynote, Elder Leke Abejide, Chairman of the House Committee on Customs and Excise, urged leaders to embrace courage and vision in implementing difficult reforms.

“A leader must be willing to step on toes and do things that may produce some bitter experience at the beginning,” Abejide said. “But the eventual and ultimate result would be a glorious end… as the Yoruba say, Adun lon gbeyin ewuro—the end result of bitter leaf is sweetness.”

He applauded the Tinubu administration’s reform efforts, including the removal of fuel subsidies, calling them “bold steps” necessary to reposition Nigeria as a global investment destination.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is non-negotiable. We must not lose faith. We must take responsibility and adopt a mindset of accountability,” Abejide stated, urging citizens to embrace action over blame. “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

“Use the pen to build, not destroy” — CP Adewale

In his address, FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, appealed to media professionals to embrace responsible and developmental journalism.

“Information is power. It can be used positively or negatively. One sentence, just a phrase, can either create peace or ignite conflict,” he cautioned. “That is why I appeal to you: let us continue to practice journalism that is proactive, responsible, and builds the nation.”

He acknowledged the risks journalists face, comparing them to security agents. “You sometimes hold information that could help the nation, but may also threaten certain interests. That makes your work incredibly vulnerable—and valuable.”

While affirming the importance of press freedom, he emphasized its responsible use. “Freedom of speech is a right, but how we use it is what defines us. Whether pushing the pen or pulling the trigger, our actions must be for Nigeria’s growth.”

“Let unity guide our reporting” — NUJ President Abdullahi

NUJ National President, Alhaji AlHassan Abdullahi, called on journalists to adopt a mindset of unity, national interest, and forgiveness in their work.

“As journalists, let’s imbibe the spirit of forgiveness. Let us use this opportunity to pray for our nation. Nigeria is our only home. Let’s prioritize national interest and security in our reporting.”

“Unity is the glue” — Comrade Grace Ike

Earlier, NUJ FCT Council Chairperson, Comrade Grace Ike, welcomed guests with a call to action rooted in the event’s spiritual undertone.

“Unity is the foundation upon which progress is built,” she said. “These are not just spiritual concepts but also powerful tools for societal transformation.”

She urged journalists to remain committed to professionalism: “Let us continue to uphold the highest standards of integrity, using our platforms to promote peace, justice, and national cohesion.”

The Easter Cantata featured moving musical performances, interfaith prayers, and reflections that echoed the central message: unity and hope remain vital pillars for a stronger Nigeria.
