The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a man, Fatai Quadri, after a disturbing viral video showed him repeatedly assaulting his wife, Rukayat, at their home in Illese-Ijebu.
Police spokesperson CSP Omolola Odutola confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, noting that operatives from the Igbeba Divisional Headquarters in Ijebu-Ode swiftly apprehended Quadri once the footage began circulating online.
“The victim is presently receiving medical treatment, while the suspect remains in custody and will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation,” Odutola said.
The viral clip captured Rukayat screaming in Yoruba: “Fatai ma pa mi”, meaning “Fatai, please don’t kill me”, as her husband rained blows on her head and neck. At one point, she begged for the gate to be opened so she could escape. The assault, which began inside their room, spilled into the compound, where Quadri continued punching and kicking her.
According to Odutola, a preliminary investigation revealed that the attack followed a marital dispute linked to allegations of infidelity. “The investigation further indicated that the suspect had transferred ownership of a 10-room en-suite apartment, jointly built with his wife, to another woman who provoked the violent attack,” she explained.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police Lanre Ogunlowo condemned the assault, declaring that the command would not tolerate any form of domestic violence. “Silence only empowers perpetrators, but timely reporting ensures protection and justice,” he said, urging victims of abuse to speak up and seek help.
The state government also vowed to ensure justice. Oluwasina Ogungbade, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, described the incident as “very reprehensible,” pledging swift prosecution of the accused.
