Epic Games has forced one Fortnite cheat to post a public apology video and pay back their tournament winnings.

Last year, Epic Games announced it was going to “ramp up legal action against Fortnite players who cheat” in a bid to improve competitive integrity at tournaments. And now, in a new post on social media, they’ve confirmed they took legal action “against a player who shared their account to unfairly qualify for the Fortnite Championship series”.

“Now they’re banned from Fortnite tournaments forever and their undeserved prize money was donated to charity. Cheating is never a winning strat,” they added before sharing the apology video.

In the video, RepulseGod admitted to letting another player use their account to qualify for a 2023 tournament, which had a grand prize of more than £3million. They were disqualified before the Global Championship kicked off, but were still given a chunk of prize money and had their expenses, including travel, paid for.

“I am banned from competing in Fornite tournaments forever. I also have to pay a monetary settlement, which includes the prize money I received but did not win fairly. Cheating in tournaments ruins the fun for the players who earned their spot in tournaments and I apologise to the Fortnite community for my actions,” continued RepulseGod. “I won’t ever cheat in Fortnite again.”

Epic has since confirmed the money will be donated to charity.

“Massive moment for competitive integrity in esports. Cheating, whether it’s account sharing, boosting, or exploits, undermines the foundation of competition. Fortnite setting this precedent is a win for all legit competitors and TOs. Hope to see more publishers take a firm stand,” wrote one fan. ““If every game developer sued and publicly shamed their cheaters we could get this industry cleaned up in six months,” said another.

In other news, it’s been reported Rockstar Games could be looking at games like Fortnite to inspire elements of Grand Theft Auto 6.
