Frankie Muniz has admitted that his character on Malcolm In The Middle was “the worst on the show”.
Muniz, who was the star of the ’00s sitcom which ran for seven seasons, watched the series back with his wife Paige about eight years ago, and wasn’t impressed with his role.
He told People: “She looked at me at the very end and she goes, ‘You weren’t acting at all. You are literally Malcolm.’ And I’m like, ‘I don’t know how to take that because Malcolm sucked.’ He was the worst character on that show!”
Despite that, Muniz, who is now 39, said he is excited about the forthcoming reboot and teaming up with co-stars Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek once again.

He continued: “We started talking about [a reboot] literally 10 years ago – me and Bryan Cranston – and slowly been working at it and it’s finally a reality. So I’m really excited. I had to do some chemistry reads. I can’t tell you with what characters, but new characters that would be on the show. And it was so weird to go back and be with Linwood Boomer, the creator, and Ken Kwapis, the director, and be back in that mindset.”
Disney+ announced a new four-episode run last December.
“I have been waiting for this moment for 18 years. Let’s find out where Malcolm and his family are now,” Muniz said at the time.
Cranston joked: “Twenty-five years since we premiered Malcolm In The Middle. I’m so excited… that I may have peed just a little bit,” before Kaczmarek added: “What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again! We’re very, very excited about coming back together and seeing what this family has been up to.”
According to an official synopsis: “Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”
Talks of a revival first surfaced in 2023 when Muniz said in a podcast that “the creator of the show, Linwood Boomer, when we contacted him [about reviving the series], he was like, ‘I think it would be amazing, but I don’t want to do it’.”
In an interview with NME, Cranston shared a similar story, saying: “I can tell you that Linwood Boomer, the creator of Malcolm In The Middle, is interested in developing an idea for a rebooted series or a movie.”
“He won’t do it unless there’s a really, really good idea though. He won’t just do it so that everyone makes a paycheck. And I’m not interested in that either. I’m interested in what happened next. It’s 20 years since we last saw Malcolm! What are the family doing now?”
A release date for the reboot in the US and UK is yet to be set.
