Born into a royal lineage with deep roots in tradition and history, Hon. Dare Adeleke has carved a unique path for himself – one defined not by privilege, but by service, humility and grassroots political engagement.

Despite his aristocratic background, Adeleke credits his upbringing, particularly the influence of his mother, for shaping his character and values. He explains that while noble birth can open doors, it does not determine one’s character. According to him, discipline and humility were instilled early in life, ensuring he and his siblings remained grounded and respectful regardless of their status.

Adeleke’s early exposure to life outside Nigeria, including time spent in Europe, also played a role in shaping his worldview. However, he insists that his commitment has always been to Nigeria. Drawing from a Yoruba proverb that describes home as the ultimate place of rest, he says his return was driven by a desire to contribute meaningfully to his community. Much of his political journey, he notes, has been rooted in Oja Oba in Ibadan, where he built his base and connection with the people.

His entry into politics was motivated by a desire to give back and uplift the less privileged. Adeleke describes democracy as a system meant to serve the downtrodden, and says his early involvement in community support – helping people access education, travel opportunities and livelihoods – naturally led him into political life.

A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adeleke played a key role in the party’s formative years. As the first youth leader in the South-West following the party’s establishment in 1998, he was actively involved in grassroots mobilisation, campaigning across the region to build support for the party and its presidential candidate at the time, former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He recalls those early days as challenging but rewarding, noting that success came through consistent engagement and persuasion rather than empty promises.

Over the years, Adeleke has remained loyal to the PDP despite its internal crises and political setbacks. He attributes many of the party’s challenges to leadership struggles and internal divisions but maintains that the PDP laid a strong developmental foundation for Nigeria during its years in power.

He is particularly vocal about internal party dynamics, identifying key figures he believes have contributed to ongoing tensions within the PDP. Despite these challenges, he remains optimistic about the party’s future, expressing confidence that it will overcome its difficulties and remain a major political force.

Adeleke has also played strategic roles within the party structure, including serving as caretaker committee chairman in states such as Ondo and Ekiti. In these roles, he has been involved in rebuilding party structures and preparing for elections. He expresses confidence in the PDP’s chances in future elections, citing what he describes as growing dissatisfaction with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

His close relationship with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde further reflects his influence within political circles. Adeleke praises Makinde’s governance, highlighting improvements in infrastructure, healthcare and security in Oyo State, and openly supports his potential presidential ambition.

Despite being widely regarded as a political “kingmaker,” Adeleke rejects the label, preferring to see himself as a committed party man dedicated to service. He believes leadership ultimately comes from God and emphasizes that his role is simply to support and uplift others.

Interestingly, Adeleke has deliberately avoided contesting elective office, a decision he describes as personal rather than permanent. While he has not ruled out future ambitions, he stresses the need for a more transparent and credible democratic process, criticising the monetisation of politics and the influence of coercion in elections.

Known for his strong grassroots connection, Adeleke attributes his political relevance to his consistent engagement with his community. Despite owning property in more affluent areas, he maintains regular contact with his base in Oja Oba, visiting frequently and sustaining personal relationships that have built trust over time.

Integrity and contentment, he says, have been central to his journey. Adeleke emphasizes a simple lifestyle, noting that he avoids excessive materialism and focuses instead on living within his means. For him, true happiness lies in community and service rather than wealth or status.

His approach to leadership is deeply rooted in empathy and generosity. He believes that making others happy ultimately brings personal fulfillment, a philosophy that has guided his actions over the years.

When asked about his achievements, Adeleke dismisses traditional markers of success such as titles or material possessions. Instead, he finds fulfillment in the positive impact he has had on people’s lives, describing this as the true measure of success.

Looking ahead, he offers advice to young Nigerians aspiring to enter politics, urging them to remain focused, determined and committed to restoring democratic values. He expresses concern about the current state of Nigeria’s democracy but remains hopeful that a new generation can rebuild and strengthen it.

For Adeleke, the journey is far from over. Whether as a strategist, mentor or potential future candidate, his commitment to service and grassroots politics continues to define his legacy.
