Gabon’s former First Lady, Sylvia Bongo, and her son, Nouredin Bongo Valentin, have been sentenced in absentia to 20 years in prison on charges of corruption. The verdict follows months of investigation into alleged embezzlement and misuse of public funds during the presidency of Ali Bongo Ondimba, who was ousted in a military coup in 2023.
Authorities accuse Sylvia and Nouredin of orchestrating financial crimes and diverting state resources for personal gain. Both were tried and convicted while outside the country, as Gabon continues efforts to recover assets linked to the former ruling family.
