NME’s latest star of The Cover, Gyubin, has compiled an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.

The South Korean singer-songwriter is on this week’s (February 17) edition of The Cover, a weekly manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. Every week, a rising artist will feature on The Cover – you can read the profile of Gyubin here, written by Gladys Yeo and featuring photography by Kim Chae Moo.

To accompany The Cover, Gyubin has curated an exclusive playlist of love songs for NME. Titled ‘The Playlist Of Us’, the collection includes timeless classics from the likes of the Bee Gees and Olivia Newton-John, alongside newer romantic favourites from Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and fellow K-pop singer IU. Listen to the full playlist on Spotify below and on Apple Music.

In this week’s The Cover, Gyubin opens up about taking a road less travelled in the South Korean music industry, turning down offers to become a K-pop idol trainee to focus on her own voice. “I’ve always felt a strong desire to express my own thoughts and emotions through music in a personal way,” she says. “A personal connection with my audience is what I’ve always wanted to achieve, and that’s why I never dreamed of becoming a member of a group.”

The singer-songwriter also touched on achieving TikTok virality with her debut single, ‘Really Like You’, recalling how “it made me really happy when I saw so many people using my song in their videos”. Though, she’s also learning not to let the early success get to her head. “I believe if I chase sincerity and creativity, the rest will follow,” she says. “I just want to make music that I’m proud of and that resonates with people instead of focusing on trends and the public’s expectations.”
