Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman has said she’s “feeling optimistic” about the show’s future even though Netflix has not yet renewed it.
Season three of the hit teen drama arrived in October but there has not yet been word about whether there is another season on the way.
During a recent conversation with fellow author William Hussey at the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival, Oseman gave an update on the show’s future.
“I’m working very hard behind the scenes to get us a renewal for Heartstopper. It is still ongoing,” she said. “We don’t have a final answer yet, but there are so many people behind the scenes who are working really hard to make it happen. We’re feeling optimistic, we’re feeling hopeful, and hopefully we’ll be able to share some news about that sometime soon. Fingers crossed.”
The author is currently working on the final sixth volume in the graphic novel series, which will form the basis of any potential fourth season.
Oseman has previously said that if a fourth season is made, it will be the show’s last.

“I will most likely be drawing volume six simultaneously while writing the season four scripts, even if we haven’t been renewed,” she said on Patreon.
“And the other thing that I have to keep in mind is that I really, extremely, devoutly need the volume six book to come out before season four comes out, so people experience the end of the story from the books first. So there’s a timer counting down now.”
In an interview with NME, Joe Locke explained how he treats every season of Heartstopper like it’s the last.
“There are so many moving parts and everyone’s so busy,” Locke said when asked about a fourth season. “For now, we’re just kind of trying to enjoy what we have made. Every time we go back [to Heartstopper], it’s like, ‘Well, this could be it.’”
In a four-star review of Heartstopper, NME wrote: “In its third and best season yet, bottles are popped, F-bombs are dropped and cherries are, well… this is Heartstopper, so the prospect of sexual intimacy is discussed with the requisite degree of respect and sensitivity. While Heartstopper has hardly evolved into a Gen Z Skins – no one is asking “shall we do a little key?” like Charli XCX – its previous hint of tweeness has gone and it does feel more real.”
