Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on his supporters to show restraint and avoid inflammatory actions that could escalate the state’s political tensions, stressing his unwavering commitment to peace and lawful governance.
Speaking Sunday night at a *Night of Tributes* organized by the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum in honour of late elder statesman, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, Fubara cautioned against aggressive rhetoric and conduct, particularly targeted at his political rival, former Governor and current Minister of the FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike.
“Some of the things I hear and see from my supporters are unnecessary,” Fubara said at the event held at Royal House of Grace Church, Port Harcourt. “They don’t reflect my principles. I wonder sometimes if they ask themselves whether their actions are truly contributing to peace and reconciliation.”
Fubara emphasized that leadership comes with responsibility and measured action, saying he remains committed to resolving the crisis in the state through legal and peaceful means.
“I now enjoy peace of mind and even feel healthier,” he added. “We must draw inspiration from the life of Pa Clark, who stood for unity, sacrifice, and truth. Let’s honour him by embodying those values.”
Reflecting on the legacies of the late Pa Clark, the governor expressed disappointment that some speakers had strayed from the core purpose of the gathering.
“This is a time for reflection—not division. Let us focus on what we can learn from Pa Clark’s lifetime dedication to justice, equity, and the peaceful development of the Niger Delta and Nigeria,” Fubara urged.
Delivering the homily, Apostle Zilly Aggrey cited James 4:13–16, Hebrews 12:14–15, and Matthew 7:12, urging political actors to embrace wisdom and peace. He called for reconciliation among all parties, including a specific appeal to Chief Wike.
“I thank Chief Wike for his role in Governor Fubara’s emergence,” Apostle Aggrey said. “But I also appeal to him to take the bold step towards peace and reconciliation. This is the only way Rivers State can overcome its challenges.”
He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his “fatherly” role in the crisis and encouraged more proactive intervention to restore normalcy and democratic order in the state.
The event drew an array of dignitaries including former Governor and Chairman of the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum, Chief Rufus Ada George; former Deputy Governor, Sir Gabriel Toby; Senator Benneth Birabi; Prof Atuboyedia Obianime; Prof Steve Azaiki; Ms Ann Kio Briggs; and Senator Andrew Uchendu, among others.
Governor Fubara was accompanied by key allies such as Senator John Azuta Mbata, Senator Adawari Michael Pepple, Chief Adokiye Amiesimaka, and Dr Edison Ehie. Also present were Hon Awaji-Inombek Abiante and Hon Chikodi Dike of the House of Representatives.
