Abuja — Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election, according to a close political ally. The revelation was made in a conversation with Vanguard, sparking fresh speculation about Jonathan’s political future.

The ally, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that consultations were already underway and that the former president is “seriously considering” a return to Aso Rock, pending the outcome of key political alignments ahead of the next general elections.

“Jonathan is ready. He has been watching the political space closely, and there’s growing pressure from different quarters urging him to run again. He has not ruled it out,” the source said.

Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, handed over power peacefully after losing to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election. His tenure was marked by both economic expansion and significant national security challenges, particularly the rise of Boko Haram insurgency.

This would not be the first time speculation has trailed Jonathan’s possible return to power. He was previously linked with a potential candidacy under the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, though he ultimately did not declare.

With the 2027 elections still over a year away, political permutations are intensifying, and Jonathan’s potential candidacy is likely to reshape conversations within both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and beyond.

Neither Jonathan nor his media team has officially commented on the latest developments.
