two side by side pictures of Beyoncé and Kacey Musgraves at the Grammys 2025

Kacey Musgraves‘ team has denied claims that the singer was throwing shade at Beyoncé at the 2025 Grammys.

The singer-songwriter’s 2024 record ‘Deeper Well’ was nominated for Best Country Album at this year’s ceremony, which took place in LA last Sunday (February 2).

Musgraves lost out in the category to Beyoncé’s acclaimed country-inspired LP ‘Cowboy Carter’. However, she did beat Bey’s ‘Texas Hold ’Em’ in the Best Country Song category with ‘The Architect’.

A clip of Musgraves’ reaction to the Best Country Album announcement soon went viral on social media.

As Bey took to the stage, the camera turned to both Musgraves and Lainey Wilson – the latter of whom was also in the running for the award. Some viewers at home suggested that the pair weren’t too happy about the result.

“Is Kacey Musgraves mad that Beyoncé won? She sure looks it,” one person wrote. Another asked: “Why does Kacey Musgraves look salty??” A third person said: “Kacey Musgraves is pissed that Beyonce beat her for best country album, look at her face expression.”

But in a brief statement issued to E! News, a representative for Musgraves hit back at the comments.

“It’s a sensationalistic false narrative meant to pit two talented female artists against each other,” it read. “There was simply no scowl or expression made.”

Beyoncé also finally won the Album Of The Year award at the Grammys for ‘Cowboy Carter’. She had previously been nominated four times in the category. She became the first Black woman to win Best Country Album.

Last March, Musgraves spoke to The Cut about Beyoncé’s pivot to country music. “The more the fucking merrier,” she said. “I don’t really care. It doesn’t affect what I’m doing. It doesn’t affect me. I’ve always been just doing my own thing.”

‘Cowboy Carter’ was snubbed at the Country Music Awards 2024, and did not receive any nominations.

Bey became the first Black woman to reach Number One on the US country chart with ‘Texas Hold ‘Em’ and the first Black woman to score a Number One country album in the US charts.

She is the most Grammy-nominated artist of all time, with a total of 99 under her belt. The singer has won the most Grammys of any act too, having taken home 35 awards overall.

In other news, Beyoncé announced her 2025 ‘Cowboy Carter’ world tour –  including a run of concerts at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
