Katy Perry, Gayle King, Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez and more have announced that they will be traveling to space on an all-women mission.
The likes of former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn will also be joining Perry, King and Sánchez on the out of this world mission.
According to the New York Post, Sánchez was the one who brought the crew together. They will be embarking on the journey through the aerospace company Blue Origin – which was founded by Bezos who also flew in space back in 2021 – later this spring.
Speaking about the journey during the announcement on CBS Mornings, King said: “I don’t know how to explain being terrified and excited at the same time. It’s like how I felt about to deliver a baby.”
She continued: “This was never my dream. It was never my dream. And somebody said, maybe you need to have new dreams, Gayle.”
King also shared that she consulted her friend Oprah Winfrey on her decision to join the team. “Once Kirby and Will and Oprah was fine with it, I was fine. I thought Oprah would say ‘no, no.’ She said, ‘I think if you don’t do it, when they all come back and you had the opportunity to do it, you will be kicking yourself.’ She’s right.”
Sánchez also shared her excitement of the mission on Instagram and wrote: “I really see this group as explorers, and storytellers, each of us about to be changed by a remarkable view of our beautiful planet. The countdown starts now! #takingupspace.”
The journey will be the 11th human flight for the Bezos-owned rocket company’s New Shepard program.
In other news, Katy Perry is set to embark on her 2025 ‘Lifetimes’ tour later this year, marking her first tour in seven years.
