Despite their long-running political rivalry, Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the Nigerian Senate, has publicly praised Minister Nyesom Wike for his performance and handling of key projects in the FCT.
Kingibe’s commendation came during the defence of the N1.78 trillion FCT budget, where she took the floor to highlight Wike’s efforts.
“My commendation carries more weight than all your commendations,” Kingibe told her Senate colleagues, as some attempted to stop her from contributing.
When another lawmaker suggested she needed a waiver to speak, Kingibe shot back confidently, “I don’t need a waiver.”
She continued, “As the senator representing the Federal Capital Territory, I want to commend the minister. It is a well-presented capital budget. I urge my colleagues to pass the budget, but I also believe some issues should be discussed privately with the minister, behind closed doors.
“There are so many details, especially concerning IDPs (internally displaced persons), that the people of the FCT or their representatives should directly discuss with the minister.”
Following her remarks, the chamber quickly moved to approve the budget. As lawmakers chorused, “Seconded,” they all rose, officially passing the N1.78 trillion proposal.
Kingibe’s unexpected praise highlights the significance of the projects under Wike’s leadership, even as political tensions continue between the two prominent figures.
