In a fresh twist to the ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) is set to nominate three lawmakers from the Lagos West Senatorial District to replace Hon. Mojisola Meranda as Speaker.
The move follows the controversial removal of former Speaker Hon. Mudashiru Obasa on January 13 by 32 out of 40 Assembly members, who accused him of fraud and high-handedness. Though Meranda was swiftly elected to the role, sources indicate that her tenure may be short-lived as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership is reportedly dissatisfied with the arrangement.
“Meranda was a consensus choice to stabilize the Assembly, but the party is keen on maintaining regional balance,” a senior APC official disclosed. “The next Speaker will likely come from Lagos West, where Obasa is from.”
To that end, eight ranking lawmakers from Lagos West are under consideration:
- Hon. Setonji David (Badagry 2)
- Hon. Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1)
- Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1)
- Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2)
- Hon. Lukmon Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1)
- Hon. Age Sulaimon (Amuwo-Odofin 2)
- Hon. Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2)
- Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 2)
From this list, the GAC will select three nominees, one of whom will ultimately be elected as the new Speaker.
A lawmaker who spoke on condition of anonymity hinted at more political maneuvering in the days ahead. “This isn’t just about Obasa’s removal; it’s about party control and loyalty. The final decision will reflect APC’s long-term strategy for Lagos politics.”
With uncertainty hanging over the Assembly, all eyes are on the GAC’s next move as the leadership crisis deepens.
