Southern Kaduna, Kaduna State–
Michael Ayuba Auta, the Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Southern Kaduna in the 2023 general elections, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Auta, who played a pivotal role in Labour Party’s performance last year, has pledged to deliver one million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani in the 2027 elections.
Addressing the crowd at his defection ceremony in Fai Ward, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Auta explained that his decision to switch allegiances was based on prevailing political realities and the overwhelming support from his constituents.
“I’ve decided to join the APC because of the demands of my people and the political direction we now face. I believe this government has given us a real sense of belonging,” Auta stated. “Under President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, our people can now go about their daily lives without fear. Unlike before, this government has worked to ensure that no one is left behind.”
Auta went on to praise the efforts of the current administration, particularly commending President Tinubu’s leadership and Governor Uba Sani’s push for inclusivity.
He also pointed to the appointment of General Christopher Musa as the Chief of Defence Staff, which he saw as a clear signal that Southern Kaduna had been fully integrated into the national government.
“This is the first time we feel genuinely represented at the highest levels,” Auta said. “General Musa’s appointment is a testament to the commitment of the government to our region, and it reassures us that Southern Kaduna’s interests are now at the heart of national policies.”
Auta’s defection is expected to enhance APC’s political footprint in the region, which has traditionally been marked by diverse political leanings. His extensive grassroots support, cultivated during his time with the Labour Party, is seen as a valuable asset for the ruling party.
“I was able to mobilize 294,000 votes for Peter Obi in 2023 without the backing of any government. Imagine what we will achieve in 2027. I guarantee you, we will deliver one million votes for President Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani. The APC’s hold in Southern Kaduna is now stronger than ever,” he declared confidently.
The defection was warmly welcomed by APC members. Hon. Dare Isuwa, the Fai Ward Chairman, described the event as “the happiest day of my life,” expressing optimism that Auta’s political influence would significantly bolster the APC’s position in Southern Kaduna.
“Michael has been a tireless advocate for the people, and with him now in the APC, the party will only grow stronger. We are proud to issue him his membership card today, and I have no doubt he will succeed in any future contest under the APC banner,” Isuwa said.
Auta’s defection has also sparked reactions from his former allies in the Labour Party. Hon. Elisha Yahaya, a business associate of Auta’s, accused the LP of betraying his contributions to the party’s growth in various states, including Kaduna, Kano, Niger, and Jigawa, within just six months.
“Michael built LP in multiple states, yet those he trusted betrayed him,” Yahaya said. “It affected his business, but we, his partners, always recognized his true worth.”
With Auta’s shift to APC, the political dynamics of Southern Kaduna are poised for a significant change, as the region’s loyalty to the ruling party strengthens in anticipation of the 2027 elections.
