Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has renamed a major road in Ibadan, effectively withdrawing the honour earlier bestowed on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

The road, an 8.3-kilometre stretch of the Phase II Idi-Ape/Akobo–Olorunda Abaa corridor, was named after Wike in June 2023, during a period of political alignment between both leaders under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

However, in a fresh development, the state government has renamed the road “Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu Road,” marking a reversal of the earlier decision. The move comes amid deepening divisions within the PDP, where Makinde and Wike now lead opposing factions.

The rift between the two politicians has been linked to the lingering leadership crisis within the party. While Wike heads one bloc, Makinde, alongside his Bauchi State counterpart, has aligned with another faction contesting control of the party structure.

The dispute recently escalated following a Court of Appeal judgment that reportedly favoured Wike’s camp, further entrenching the divide.

Although the Oyo State Government has not issued a detailed official statement explaining the renaming, political observers view the decision as a symbolic fallout of the ongoing PDP power struggle.
