The Fantastic Four

The Trailer for The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps has been released online, and fans have had very strong reactions to it.

The film, starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as a group of superpowered scientists is the first time the characters have been incorporated into the MCU.

Previously, 20th Century Fox had the rights to the characters and produced two films in the ‘00s starring Jessica Alba, as well as a 2015 adaptation starring Michael B Jordan.

Following Marvel’s parent company Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox in 2019, the studio is free to incorporate them into their shared universe. Chris Evans’ version of Johnny Storm from the 00’s Fantastic Four films has already made a comedic appearance in last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

This new trailer introduces the characters, who live in a retro-style world not unlike the aesthetic from Marvel show Loki. In the trailer, we meet each of the group, including Moss-Bachrach’s The Thing, while Kirby’s character Sue Storm comforting Pascal’s Reed Richards, saying that while their powers have changed them, they are still the people they used to be.

The clip also gives a teaser of each character’s powers in the film, due for release on July 25. Richards’ abilities, the power to stretch himself, are absent however. The teaser also gives us a quick glimpse of Galactus, the villain of the movie, played by Ralph Ineson.

Fans have largely embraced the new footage. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) exclaimed: “IS MARVEL BACK????”, while another wrote: “Wait this look so good we wonn!!!” One commented on the lack of scenes displaying Reed Richards’ powers, saying: “Hope the reason we didn’t see Reed’s super powers in this trailer is a clue that there’s a twist at the end and Pedro Pascal isn’t actually Reed Richards, but someone impersonating him and the real one is at the end”.

One fan commented: “Excited! GALACTUS! …. The Thing tho…..”, echoing a sentiment among social media that the design of The Thing left a lot to be desired.

One said: “I am not a fan of the things design at all he looked so much better in the early 2000s movies imo. guess we’ll have to see if it grows on me”, while another complained: “I absolutely HATE the way The Thing looks. It looks like they had AI try to create him”.

Recently, Marvel chief Kevin Feige explained that the video game Fortnite was used as inspiration for the Galactus character. Also, last month it was announced that The Fantastic Four will make their debut on popular game Marvel Rivals.
