LAGOS – Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has issued a stark warning regarding the country’s political trajectory, calling for a collective effort to save Nigeria from what he describes as an emerging “one-man dictatorship.”
Speaking Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, Momodu addressed the high stakes of the upcoming 2027 general elections. He argued that the nation’s current state requires urgent intervention, likening Nigeria to a patient in critical condition.
During the interview, Momodu emphasized that his political stance is driven by principle rather than personal gain. He suggested that joining the current administration would be the easier path for those seeking wealth, but noted he has chosen a different route.
“I’m happy that we have a few people with good conscience, who can say to hell with making cheap money in politics,” Momodu stated. “If I wanted to make money in politics, I would be with President Bola Tinubu. I will be in the forefront, but that is not the issue.”
Momodu framed the 2027 elections not just as a political contest, but as a necessary “rescue mission” to restore democratic balance and focus on national development.
“We need to save Nigeria from a one-man dictatorship. Nigeria needs to recover because it’s like taking a patient to the hospital,” he explained. He further elaborated on the stages of national restoration, suggesting that structural fixes must precede growth:
“The doctors make sure they rescue the patient. Make sure you recover and then they can reset whatever went wrong and then you can begin to talk about developmental projects. That’s how politics is.”Momodu’s comments come amid increasing discussions regarding opposition alignments and the search for a formidable front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.
