The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, emphasized that the struggle to actualize Biafra cannot be suppressed.
In a tweet shared by his legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, on Tuesday, Kanu reaffirmed that Biafra is a non-negotiable cause.
Ejimakor’s tweet included a message from Kanu, stating, “I deeply appreciate the unwavering support of the people of Biafra and the entire IPOB family in the face of my continued unlawful detention. I assure you all that our pursuit of self-determination, until its logical conclusion, is non-negotiable.”
Kanu was forcefully taken from Kenya by the Nigerian government in 2021 and transported to Nigeria.
Despite an Appeals Court order for his release, he remains in the custody of the Department of State Services in Abuja.
The Federal Government has lodged an appeal with the Supreme Court, expressing its position on the Biafran leader. Kanu faces charges of treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, and publishing defamatory material, among others.
A few days ago, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a civil rights advocacy group, appealed to President Tinubu for Kanu’s release, as a step toward national reconciliation.
Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has also joined the chorus of voices calling for Kanu’s freedom. Mbah urged President Bola Tinubu to release the IPOB leader and hand him over to any of the South-East governors.
Mbah stated, “We believe that his release will expedite the healing process Nigeria needs at this time. It will also demonstrate his administration’s willingness to extend a brotherly hand of fellowship to Ndigbo.
“Additionally, the governor announced that there will no longer be a “sit-at-home” order in the state.
The separatist group’s directive, which mandated Ndigbo in the South East States to stay at home every Monday, had negatively impacted economic activities in the region.
