Abuja, June 12, 2025 – The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mallam Alhassan Yahya, has received a warm congratulatory message from Dr. Gbemiga Bamidele, Convener of the Society for Journalism Enhancement Initiatives (S4JEI), as the Union marks its 70th anniversary.
In his goodwill message commemorating the NUJ’s Platinum Jubilee, Dr. Bamidele expressed delight over the Union’s resilience and achievements since its founding on March 15, 1955.
“I send this message with great pleasure and pride, knowing the circumstances surrounding the Union’s birth and its remarkable survival and growth over seven decades,” Bamidele stated.
He praised Nigerian journalists for their global impact and continued dedication to excellence in service to the country and humanity. According to him, the Nigerian press has long stood at the forefront of the struggle for human dignity, rights, and social justice.
“The press was the principal weapon in the fight against British colonialism and native tyranny during both civilian and military rule,” he noted.
Dr. Bamidele paid tribute to pioneer figures in Nigerian journalism, including the NUJ’s first president, Mobolaji Odunewu; its first General Secretary, Olu Oyesanya; and nationalist leaders such as Herbert Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He also acknowledged the contributions of veteran journalist Sam Amuka.
He concluded by congratulating the NUJ President and all Nigerian journalists on the occasion, urging them to remain proud of their heritage and continue steering the Union toward greater heights.
“Mr. President, kindly accept my warm congratulations on this auspicious Platinum Jubilee of our great Union, and my best wishes as you lead it to an enviable level,” he said.
