Former United States President Barack Obama has paid glowing tribute to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, describing him as “a musical genius from Nigeria” who revolutionized global music by blending funk, jazz, and soul into what became known as Afrobeat.

In a video shared on his social media account, Obama celebrated Fela’s enduring influence, saying, “Fela wasn’t just a musician; he was a movement. His sound and his message transcended borders and inspired generations to speak truth to power.”

The former president urged fans to listen to a new podcast series titled “Fela Kuti: Fear No Man,” which chronicles the life and legacy of the late Nigerian icon. The 12-episode series is produced under Higher Ground, the podcast platform founded by Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama.

According to the producers, Fear No Man will feature interviews with key figures in the arts and members of the Kuti family, including Yeni Kuti, Femi Kuti, and Femi’s son, Mádé Kuti — all of whom continue to carry the Afrobeat torch.

“Fela’s story is more than music; it’s about courage, creativity, and conviction,” Obama added. “Through his art, he gave voice to the voiceless and stood firm against oppression. That’s a legacy worth celebrating.”
