Akure, Ondo State – The Ondo State Government has announced that anyone convicted of kidnapping in the state will henceforth face the death penalty by hanging.
The announcement was made on Saturday by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Kayode Ajulo, SAN, while briefing reporters after a State Executive Council meeting held in Akure.
“The new anti-kidnapping legislation will prescribe death by hanging for anyone found guilty of kidnapping in Ondo State,” Ajulo said. “This will be done in line with due legal process and through proper judicial review by the Ondo State House of Assembly.”
Ajulo also warned that any buildings or properties used in the commission of kidnapping crimes would be demolished, but only after following all necessary court procedures.
“The governor is a firm believer in the rule of law and will not act outside the boundaries of the law as seen in some other states,” he said. “We want to reassure investors and residents alike that Ondo is safe for lives, property, and business.”
In addition to tackling kidnapping, the council also expressed concern about the rising cases of cultism and pledged to take strong legislative and security measures to address it.
Also speaking at the briefing, the Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, revealed that the council approved the installation of 6,000 solar-powered streetlights across the state’s three senatorial districts to enhance security and infrastructure.
Olawoye further announced the approval of a 6.7km dual carriageway project linking Supare Junction to Akungba and Ikare in Akoko land.
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Bola Taiwo, disclosed that the council had approved the selection process for the Olu of Okeigbo through the designated warrant chiefs.
“These decisions mark a strong stance by the state government against insecurity while also pushing ahead with key development projects,” Taiwo said.
