The Nigeria Police Force has officially resumed the issuance of tinted glass permits across the country, following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

This was announced on Wednesday in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who said the decision aims to address public complaints and restore order in law enforcement interactions with motorists.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reactivated the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits nationwide through a secure and user-friendly digital platform, available at https://possap.gov.ng ” Adejobi stated.

He explained that the decision followed numerous reports from Nigerians about harassment by security operatives over factory-fitted tinted windows.

“This initiative comes in response to widespread public complaints about the harassment of motorists. It reflects the need for a transparent and accountable system for regulating factory-fitted tinted glass,” he added.

According to the police, the increasing prevalence of vehicles with factory-fitted tinted windows for comfort and aesthetics has made it essential to formalize their use while safeguarding public safety.

“Tinted vehicles have often been exploited for criminal purposes, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and ‘one-chance’ scams,” Adejobi warned. “Their use hampers police visibility and impedes effective law enforcement.”

To strike a balance between legitimate use and national security, the police have introduced a modern permit system with enhanced features.

“The new platform includes QR-coded digital permits, identity verification via NIN and TIN, biometric capture, and background checks,” he noted. “Applicants can now complete the process within 72 hours.”

Adejobi announced that a 30-day grace period will begin on May 1, 2025, allowing motorists time to comply with the new system before full enforcement begins.

“Enforcement will commence at the end of this grace period. Any officers found engaging in misconduct such as extortion or harassment will face disciplinary action,” he emphasized.

The Inspector-General, through the statement, reaffirmed the Force’s dedication to technology-driven and citizen-focused policing.

“We are committed to promoting a modern, accountable system of policing. We urge Nigerians to embrace this initiative to ensure safer roads and a more secure nation,” the statement concluded.
