The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate has been released under the recent Presidential Prerogative of Mercy exercise, as the process is still undergoing final administrative review.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Fagbemi explained that the review stage is a crucial part of the procedure, aimed at ensuring all names and recommendations meet the legal and procedural standards required before any release instrument is issued.
He noted that following the approval of the Council of State, the final phase involves issuing the official instrument authorizing implementation. This stage, he said, provides an opportunity for a last round of verification to correct any possible errors before forwarding the final list to the Controller-General of Corrections for action.
“The verification process is part of standard protocol and reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and due diligence,” the statement read.
Fagbemi also commended the public for its vigilance and constructive feedback, describing such engagement as a sign of Nigerians’ deep concern for justice and good governance.
“There is no delay in the process; it is simply following the law to the letter to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s mercy. The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness,” he stated.
The Attorney-General assured that once all checks are concluded, the public will be promptly informed of the next steps.
