Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday led a powerful coalition of political heavyweights in the state to formally endorse President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office.
The endorsement, which took place at a gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders in Lagos, brought together former governors Akinwunmi Ambode and Babatunde Fashola, alongside Senators James Faleke and Tokunbo Abiru, among others.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described Tinubu’s leadership as “visionary and transformative,” noting that the president’s policies have laid the foundation for a stronger and more resilient Nigeria.
“President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is taking root, and we are already witnessing progress across sectors,” Sanwo-Olu said. “This is the time to consolidate, not to change course.”
Former Governor Babatunde Fashola used the platform to raise concerns over the party’s declining voter turnout in Lagos despite a surge in voter registration.
“We are facing increasing voter registration and decreasing voter turnout. That is not good for us,” Fashola warned. “We must interrogate why enthusiasm is waning. We used to be the state that led the party in total votes. What has happened? Why has the vote dropped?”
He reminded party members that Lagos once set the benchmark for voter participation. “In the past, we recorded 1.5 million votes when our closest rival barely managed 300,000. We must re-strategise to reclaim that leadership position,” he added.
Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, announced new incentives to reinvigorate grassroots mobilisation, pledging ₦1 million for the best-performing polling unit, ₦5 million for the top ward, and ₦20 million for the best local government area.
“Our members have shown great loyalty and commitment,” Ojelabi said. “Now is the time to translate that dedication into action. The journey to a successful 2027 election begins now.”
He also revealed that the party would refund nomination fees paid by aspirants during the last local government elections, encouraging members to intensify efforts at mobilising voters in the ongoing registration exercise.
Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, reaffirmed the state’s support for President Tinubu’s leadership, describing him as a “visionary reformer whose agenda is already transforming Nigeria.”
“Continuity is critical at this point in our national journey,” Hamzat said. “President Tinubu’s reforms are rooted in renewed hope, productive governance, and economic recovery. We must all rally behind him to ensure these gains are sustained.”
Hamzat urged APC members to act as ambassadors of progress and good governance. “Let’s carry the message of unity, development, and renewed hope to every street and community,” he said. “This is a collective mission to move Nigeria forward.”
With the show of solidarity from Lagos political leaders, the APC in the state appears poised to play a leading role in President Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
