…Julius Berger MD Faces Arrest Threat

The Nigerian Senate has directed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to suspend all ongoing demolition exercises in the FCT, except those sanctioned by a court of law.
The decision comes amid mounting controversy over the demolitions, which have left many residents homeless. During a plenary session, Senator Ireti Kingibe raised concerns over the exercise, alleging that “due process was not followed in the demolitions.”
She urged her colleagues to address the plight of affected residents and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
In response, Wike defended his actions, stating, “The ongoing demolitions are targeted at illegal structures and shanties that pose significant security threats. My administration remains committed to restoring order in Abuja.”
To address the issue, the Senate set up an ad-hoc committee led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin to investigate the demolitions. The committee is expected to invite Wike for clarification and submit its findings within two weeks.
In a related development, the Senate summoned the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC to provide details on the N18 billion allocated for the Odukpani-Itu Highway project.
The Senate expressed frustration over the company’s refusal to cooperate, with Senator Barau Jibrin warning, “We will not hesitate to invoke our constitutional powers to ensure compliance.”
The Senate has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest if the Managing Director fails to appear at the next investigative hearing.
