The Switch 2 was announced last month with a hardware-focused teaser trailer. The short video showcased the bigger, more powerful console and the upgraded joy-con controller. It also teased a new Mario Kart game.
More information is set to be revealed in April during a special Direct presentation before fans around the world will get the chance to try out the Switch 2 via a series of hands-on experiences.
Nintendo hasn’t confirmed when the Switch 2 will be released, when pre-orders will launch or how much the console will cost. However there are plenty of rumours that suggest the new console could cost up to £400.
During a recent earnings call, Furukawa said he was focused on “the affordability that our customers expect from Nintendo products”. The original Switch cost £279.99 when it launched in 2017. The smaller Lite followed in 2019 with a RRP of £199.99 while the more powerful OLED version of the console came in 2021 and cost £309.99.
Rival consoles like the PlayStation 5 will currently set you back £389.99 while the digital-only Xbox Series S starts at £249.99. Gamers can also buy the handheld Steam Deck from £349.99.
However Furukawa did say that global economic factors like high inflation rates and Trump’s proposed tariffs would also have to be taken into account. “Inflation is currently rising and that the exchange rate environment has changed significantly since the launch of the Nintendo Switch.”
Earlier this week, industry group ESA (which represents Nintendo and other large gaming companies) warned that Trump’s proposed tariffs on imports will cause “significant harm” to the industry.
Nintendo has also told fans that getting a Switch 2 should be easy thanks to new anti-scalper measures but Furukawa did confirm the original Switch wouldn’t be getting a discount.
In other news, Bloodborne fans are convinced news about the long-awaited remake of the iconic horror game is coming.
