Isiekenesi, Imo State –
The village of Umuaghobe in Isiekenesi, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, was a solemn yet vibrant scene as dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers gathered to honor the life of Ezinne Martina Ezenwa, who passed away at the age of 93.
Her final journey on January 18, 2025, was marked by an outpouring of love, respect, and heartfelt tributes, as mourners celebrated a matriarch whose life embodied kindness, faith, and resilience.
A Life of Love, Service, and Strength
Ezinne Martina Ezenwa, fondly called “Mama”, was the beloved wife of the late Chief Stephen Odoemena Ezenwa. Their union, which began in the early 1950s in the Catholic Church, was built on love, faith, and dedication to family and community. Together, they raised nine children who now carry forward her legacy of hard work and unity.
Her children include Mrs. Mariastina Obiala (née Ezenwa), the late Tony Ezenwa, Arch Cletus Ezenwa, Hon. Marcel Ezenwa, Mrs. Stella Amaka Duru (née Ezenwa), the triplets—Mr. Joseph Ezenwa, Mr. Justin Ezenwa, Mrs. Justina Onyido (née Ezenwa)—and Mr. Franklin Ezenwa.
Speaking at the funeral, Hon. Marcel Ezenwa, her third son and a respected politician, businessman, and community leader, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received.
“My mother was a pillar of strength and a beacon of wisdom. She lived a life of service, always putting others before herself. Though we mourn her loss, we also celebrate her life and the lessons she instilled in us,” he said, his voice heavy with emotion.
A Grand and Fitting Farewell
The burial ceremony was a blend of traditional rites, heartfelt tributes, and a solemn Holy Mass led by Bishop Augustine T. Ukwuoma of Orlu Diocese. In his sermon, the bishop urged the congregation to live by Mama’s virtues, highlighting her deep faith and generosity.
“Mama Martina was a woman of faith, a mother to many, and a light in this community. She may be gone, but her impact will live on in the hearts of those she touched,” he preached.
The funeral attracted an array of prominent guests, including community leaders, political figures, and business associates of Chief Marcel Ezenwa. Traditional dance groups and local musicians performed, adding cultural significance to the occasion.
Following the church service, Ezinne Martina Ezenwa was laid to rest in her family compound, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and sympathizers. As the final prayers were said and dust was returned to dust, tears flowed freely, yet there was also gratitude for a life well spent.
Speaking after the interment, her first daughter, Mrs. Mariastina Obiala, vowed that the family would uphold their mother’s values.
“Mama lived a life of love, patience, and unity. We will continue to uphold her values and keep her memory alive,” she affirmed.
As the sun set over Umuaghobe, the atmosphere was filled with both sorrow and appreciation—mourning the loss of a remarkable mother while celebrating the 93 years she spent touching lives.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
