EPE, Lagos — In a dramatic turn of events, the Chairperson of Epe Local Government, Surah Animashaun, has suspended the installation of a new Olu of Epe following a dispute between two contenders for the throne. The LG boss also cancelled all Eid-al-Adha (Sallah) celebrations, including Jumat prayers, within the local council, citing security concerns.

The decision was contained in an official letter addressed to the Grand Chief Imam of Epe on Tuesday.

“Sequel to the dual installation of the new Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom on the 2nd of June, 2025, which is legally null and void due to the recent passing of Oba Shefiu Adewale, I am writing to inform your office that High Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and High Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji, both parading themselves as the newly installed Olu-Epe, are hereby suspended till further hearing from the authorities,” Animashaun wrote.

The late Oba Shefiu Adewale passed away in the early hours of Saturday, May 31, at the age of 86. His death has since triggered a succession crisis, with Chief Odedeogboro and Chief Ikuforiji both claiming to be the rightful heir.

Speaking on the matter, Animashaun stressed the importance of preventing unrest.

“The decision to suspend both installations is necessary to forestall any potential breakdown of law and order in the community. We must put the safety of our people first,” she told reporters.

She added that due to “unforeseen circumstances, security concerns, and public health issues,” all Eid celebrations and Jumat prayers scheduled to take place at the Epe Central Mosque and Eid Ground in Oke Balogun have also been cancelled.

Residents expressed mixed reactions to the suspension. A community elder who asked not to be named said, “This is the first time in decades we won’t be holding prayers at the Eid ground. But I understand the chairperson’s concern. Peace is more important.”

The late Oba Adewale, who once held the revered title of Otun-Balogun before becoming Balogun and eventually king, was confirmed dead by High Chief Musiliu Adeniyi, the Balogun of Epe.

“It is true. He passed away early that morning and was buried at 4pm the same day, in line with tradition,” Adeniyi said.

As the throne of Olu of Epe remains contested, the local government has assured residents that further updates will be communicated soon.
