President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed grief over the death of at least 26 people in a boat mishap on the River Niger in Kogi State, urging stricter adherence to safety measures in water transport.

The tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday in Ibaji Local Government Area, involved traders travelling to Ilushi Market in neighbouring Edo State.

Kogi State’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Fanwo, confirmed the casualties in a statement issued Wednesday morning.
“This is an unfortunate and deeply saddening incident,” Fanwo said. “The death toll has risen to 26, and our hearts go out to the families of the victims.”

Reacting to the tragedy, President Tinubu, through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described the accident as “shocking and unfortunate.”
“The President expresses profound sorrow at the unfortunate incident, especially as the victims were embarking on their legitimate quest to make a decent living,” Onanuga said.

The President also praised emergency responders for their swift action while directing all levels of government to intensify rescue and support efforts.
“President Tinubu once again urges operators of water transportation to prioritise safety over financial considerations in their daily business,” Onanuga added.

Tinubu further prayed for the repose of the departed and wished survivors a speedy recovery.
