In a decisive move, President Donald Trump has enacted an executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.
Titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” the order grants federal agencies, including the Justice and Education Departments, significant authority to ensure compliance with Title IX, reflecting the Trump administration’s stance that sex is defined by the gender assigned at birth.
During a press conference, President Trump stated, “We must protect the integrity of women’s sports. This order is about ensuring fair competition for female athletes.”
He emphasized his administration’s commitment to enforcing these new guidelines across institutions that receive federal funding.
Additionally, Trump issued a warning to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. “I’ve empowered Secretary of State Marco Rubio to communicate to the IOC that our country categorically rejects what I call transgender lunacy,” he declared.
The president’s remarks come as the IOC has largely deferred to international sports federations for decisions regarding transgender participation.
The executive order is expected to spark significant debate and legal challenges as it reshapes the landscape of women’s sports in the United States.
