The Trump administration is proposing to eliminate $555 million in U.S. funding for the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) main development fund, marking a significant shift in its approach to foreign aid. According to a proposal sent to Congress on Friday, Washington intends to halt all future contributions to the African Development Fund, which supports low-income countries across the continent.
The White House stated the decision reflects a realignment of U.S. priorities, saying the fund is “not currently aligned” with its strategic interests. The proposed cuts would leave a substantial gap in the AfDB’s financing plans, potentially forcing the institution to reassess how its key fund operates.
The fund’s current $8.9 billion, three-year financing cycle concludes this year. African nations had been advocating for a $25 billion replenishment as recently as October, but the proposed U.S. withdrawal threatens to derail those ambitions.
